This design has good latency for creature logic systems, resulting in on signals around 40 ticks after writes and off signals around 150 ticks after writes.  It has a 110 tick refractory period, representing the time necessary for the hatch covers to close.

Another creature-based logic design is discussed in [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=106498.0 this forum post by dhokarena56]. Because it is only one tile wide, although it is much longer than, say, the fluid latch, many can easily be built in sequence given a few good mechanics, a good supply of mechanisms and a little time. It requires a couple of puppies or other domesticated animals and a disarmed, non-building-destroyer hostile creature.
