Water comes in many forms in Dwarf Fortress, each of which behaves differently. All water is represented by a double tilde (≈), but whether a dwarf can fish in it, farm with it, drown in it, put it in buckets, or channel it somewhere else, will depend on a number of factors.
Dwarves will drink water from the outside river, the cave river, or a well. Dwarves who are bedridden or in prison will have water brought to them in buckets, if there is a carrier and a bucket free.
Dwarves need alcohol to get through the working day. Any dwarf without access to alcohol will work more slowly and complain about its absence.
