40d Talk:Galena

From Dwarf Fortress Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

According to the Stone restrictions, Galena is:

  • Ore of silver (50%)
  • Ore of lead.

Not sure exactly what the 50% means. --Peristarkawan 00:48, 30 October 2007 (EDT)

I haven't been getting anywhere near 50/50 silver/lead with my galena - i've smelted around 50 units of ore and lead bars are significantly more commonly produced--Alc 00:52, 30 October 2007 (EDT)

Well, my guess is that it has half as much chance of producing silver as of producing lead, so that you average 33% silver and 67% lead. --Peristarkawan 00:59, 30 October 2007 (EDT)

Smelting is currently bugged (doesn't produce enough bars), so we may have to wait until the next patch to see how galena is supposed to be working. Furiousfish 16:57, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

I smelted some galena ore, and I noticed that it always produced lead, and only sometimes did it also produce silver. Which most likely means that galena produces lead 100% of the time, and has a 50% chance of producing silver as well. --Trorbes 20:06, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

Well, it'd make sense, considering Galena is really only lead. However wikipedia says that there's often silver in Galena deposits. So alway lead and sometimes silver makes pretty good sense. --MonsterKingRen 23:19, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
That's what I assumed when I first saw it, heh.--Draco18s 23:30, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

This sentence is in the current version - "Calculate in also that lead is one of the least valuable and versatile metals." This sentence doesn't make sense - the start of it. Can the original author please rephrase it or remove it. Yvain 08:58, 9 April 2008 (EDT)

Don't worry so much about the original author. Feel free to edit (: VengefulDonut 09:41, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
Yeh I should have just removed it and explained why. Yvain 01:47, 13 April 2008 (EDT)

so whats the point of silver?[edit]

whats the point of silver if brass is almost as valuble and easier to smelt, while you only get 1 silver bar every other time? unsigned comment by err

Let me answer with a counter question, What is the piont of Gold? Hoborobo 16:27, 30 July 2008 (EDT)
Silver is good for training weapons. VengefulDonut 02:01, 30 July 2008 (EDT)
What is the point of gold? Without it how could you sing the Diskworld dwarven folk song which goes:
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, gold....

you get more bars in more places--Eerr 21:53, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

Igneous extrusive layers[edit]

Does this stuff really show up in igneous extrusive layers? Because it's not in any of their listings.--CoolMatthew 08:57, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

My current fort has plenty of galena to be found in rhyolite, which is igneous extrusive. --FunkyWaltDogg 12:54, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
The raws have it as showing up in igneous extrusive. So the igneous extrusive stuff should be edited. I think that the lists come from a template, so it might be quickest to look for the template and edit that. --LegacyCWAL 14:51, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, no list template, but there's only five of 'em, so I went ahead and edited the I.Ex. layers. --LegacyCWAL 14:58, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

"best value"[edit]

Adding that making billon from Galena ore is most profitable reaction. If anyone asks i can show the math later but its late right now.--Mrdudeguy 11:37, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Note that while billon is the statistically most profitable end product value-wise, smelting Galena directly into lead with the 50% chance for silver creates some silver for practice weapons, plus lead bars which can be used just fine for "bars" (grills and grates), or for metal cages or chains (necessary for jails, restraints for animals.) On a map without any revealed silver, hoping the elves will drop by with exactly the wooden weapon you need to spar can be a futile exercise. "Value" can be judged by more than created wealth. (ooh, so deep...) --Albedo 19:32, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree with the bit about training weapons but I cant think of a good use for lead (bars and grills can be made from stone).--Mrdudeguy 07:41, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
