My experience would suggest that dwarves told to "stay indoors" will interpret the command as "stay underground," which pretty much sucks if you've built a surface fortress. -EarthquakeDamage 02:27, 10 November 2007 (EST)

You are correct according to my experience. "Stay indoors" is interpreted as "stay underground/in the subterranean". So in this sense whether a tile is considered "indoors" is not based on whether it is outdoors or indoors. It is actually based on whether the tile is above ground or subterranean. In my opinion this is a glitch in the game and may cause some gray hairs when designing fortress defense. Siege operators, for example, could be rendered useless if one made the wrong assumption about how tiles are considered "indoors". --Flaa 10:40, 22 April 2008 (EDT)
Sadly, its not even that good. It interprets it as 'if I go above ground, cancel my action and tell me i'm in a forbidden area'. Which is incredibly stupid, as it leads to dwarves milling about the entrance to your fortress because they keep wanting to take haul tasks for items outside, step outside, realize they can't be there, step back inside, and try to do another outside haul task. And if you're fighting off goblins or similar, there are going to be abundant haul tasks outside (eg, looting the dead). It also spams you with job cancellation messages. Possibly the most frustrating aspect of the game (its a tie between that and pets for me). --Squirrelloid 18:37, 22 April 2008 (EDT)
