- Editors & Contributors - If you include diagrams, try as much as possible to to use standard Dwarf Fortress symbols for your diagrams - an x is an up/down stairwell, a ╬ is a fortification, a ▲ is an up-ramp/slope, etc. etc. It's understood that there are no standard symbols for every purpose and military designation, and distinguishing from goblins and mountain goats may be desirable, but as far as possible let's keep it standardized.

New Pages, new organization[edit]
There had been about 5-6 pages on "defense", and articles and advice on various topics were scattered and repeated across all of them. This is an effort to re-organize them into 4 tightly defined and user-friendly topics using current DF wiki naming conventions - a General guide and overview Defense guide, and 3 articles on specific design - layout and architecture (Defense design), traps (Trap design), and specific advice on organizing your military (Military design).
Discussion from any pages removed or renamed will be placed (or linked) under one of those four.--Albedo 06:21, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Some thoughts[edit]
I postulate that a more accurate name for this page would be Military guide. "Design" is a word that ought to be reserved for architecture.
Also, before anyone gets too excited about editing this page, remember that Toady is in the process of dramatically changing the way squads are commanded. I'm not trying to discourage editing, just keep in mind that it's going to have to be rewritten with the next release. --Mikaka 22:33, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- "Military design" is not my favorite, but it's not a full "Guide" either. It ignores weapons and armor, training and combat. It is all about various "architectures" for military organization and deployment, a soft use of that word, but a valid one. And parallel to what hard architectural design pages do for bedrooms, workshops & etc - only we're not dealing with stone and dimensions, but troops and tactics. And in serving that role, the article name follows those other pages in that parallel function.--Albedo 22:52, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

- This article is exactly parallel to all the other "design" articles (bedroom design, workshop design, trap design, fortress design, etc), which allow users a soapbox to present a specific "This is how I do it" in one form or another. As such, I thought an "X design" title was most approp. This is more than tactics, more than strategy, more than organization or planning or training - it's an umbrella for all approaches to the broader topic of "dwarves as (intentional) combatants".--Albedo 20:30, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
