Smelting non-melting ores isn't really peculiar; the issue is more that DF doesn't actually simulate smelting:
DF's (magma) smelters smelt exclusively through heat in cases where this just wouldn't work (everything that's not a native metal, basically); real-world smelting of ores is not just application of heat, it's a breaking of chemical bonds which absolutely requires a reducing agent (carbon, usually, but strong electrical energy can also work when applied to molten ore - see aluminium) and which can take place at temperatures significantly below any involved melting points - medieval iron smelting happened at temperatures below the melting points of iron and its main ores.--Larix (talk) 12:58, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
