COMMANDER'S LOG
BOMREK KIVISHATOL, HAMMERDWARF
COMMANDER OF THE BELTED DAGGERS
FROM THE MISSION ARCHIVES OF THOB ODUR

Year 210[edit]

First of Granite, 210[edit]

Here follows the log of Bomrek Kivishatol, Hammerdwarf. Commander of the Belted Daggers of Thob Odur.

In the year 206, the fortress of Treatyflames was established by a company of dwarves from Becorrovod known as the Twinkling Spears. At the end of the year 208, the annual merchant caravan returned to Becorrovod with news that most of the dwarves had perished, as well as the journal of Onul Othosshem, the original expedition leader. According to the merchants, he had starved to death during a great famine and been succeeded by another dwarf named Sakzul Zegoltar. In his journal, Onul spoke of a rapid cataclysmic whirlwind of hardships that claimed many dwarven lives. In addition to the aforementioned famine were repeated assaults by goblin forces. Since then, there has been no word from Treatyflames. Fearing the worst, the king of Becorrovod contacted our own queen, Sigun Ilralbunem. Becorrovod is a peaceful nation with few troops to spare, while Thob Odur is more militarized due to a nearby goblin kingdom. An agreement was reached, and my troops and I were sent to ascertain the fate of the dwarves of Treatyflames.

Today, we arrived at our destination. It was instantly clear that the fortress has fallen; clothes are strewn all about, some still blowing in the wind. Empty bins lie about, devoid of their contents, likely the targets of looters. A few stone crafts are scattered about, likely having been picked over and discarded by scavengers. A half-finished enclosure has been built over a section of the river; what it was intended for, I cannot say. But most chilling of all are the bones. Dwarven bones, everywhere. Already the hope of finding any survivors has died. All that's left now is to see if we can learn what fate ultimately before these poor souls.

Second of Granite, 210[edit]

Hammerdwarf Iton Zaskubuk located Sakzul's office. After a brief search, we discovered a journal in his desk. He spoke briefly of the hard times under which he had assumed leadership, but once the caravan arrived he became rather optimistic about their chances. It goes on to speak of a well shaft they had completed during the month of Moonstone, but mysteriously ends there. I suspect whatever happened happened suddenly, allowing him no chance to record any details.

My men and I are preparing to descend to the next level of the fortress. We will be on our guard.

Third of Granite, 210[edit]

We have secured the second level, and found no sign of hostiles. There are more bones here. Many are dwarven. Several more, however, clearly belonged to goblins. I believe we have found the answer to what befell this place...

Fourth of Granite, 210[edit]

The residential halls are secure. Not unexpectedly, it is a mess. Stones, clothing, and bones - dwarf and goblin - are scattered everywhere.

Fifth of Granite, 210[edit]

We have secured the last level of the fortress: the mausoleum. According to the inscriptions on the coffins, interred here are all seven members of the Twinkling Spears, Onul Othesshem, and a number of dwarves that died bravely fighting off the initial goblin assaults.

Eighth of Granite, 210[edit]

We've spent the last three days during a full sweep of the fortress and the surrounding area. The goblins that attacked Treatyflames are long gone by now, their violent tendencies perhaps sated having slain all of the fortress's inhabitants. I stayed up all night rereading my copy of Onul Othesshem's journal, as well as the recovered journal of Sakzul Zegoltar. It is my recommendation as commander of the Belted Daggers that Treatyflames not be reclaimed. These poor souls suffered three years of terrible hardships; let the dead rest in peace. Tomorrow morning we will seal the entrance and depart back to Thob Odur. May Lurit Kadollimul speed and guard us on our way.
