Fuel needed without magma[edit]
I can't verify it at the moment, but did this change in the new version? I'm pretty sure it was like this in 40d:
| smelting 2 iron bars: | 2 fuel (2 jobs) |
| smelting 1 pig iron bar: | 1 fuel (1 job) |
| smelting 2 steel bars: | 1 fuel (1 job) |
| total: | 4 fuel |
Yea it's still like this.
- You need another coke to carbonize the iron into pig iron. Then you need another coke to make the steel, even though you should actually be removing carbon from the pig iron in that step. So I think without magma you need a total of 6 fuel. Agree? If so, correct the article.

- That was only true in 0.27-0.28 (i.e. 32a thru 40d) - in 0.31 (and also in 0.23 and earlier), making pig iron and steel at a non-magma smelter requires two units of coke/charcoal, since the fuel is not used as part of the reaction. --Quietust 01:18, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Bug with making steel?[edit]
I seem to have all the required items.
Pure iron. Pig iron. Coke. And Flux (Marble)
Am I doing something wrong? Pure iron is the same as normal iron, right? There's no option to make just iron, so what am I doing wrong? – unsigned comment by 97.125.39.116
- If the item's actually called "pure iron", then you're using a modded version of DF and all bets are off. If it's called "iron bars", then make sure you're using a marble boulder and not marble blocks. --Quietust 01:49, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Minor Bug?[edit]
I ran out of pig iron whilst making steel bars, and the error message I received was something along the lines of "150 pig iron bars required". Obviously this isn't true, but it was weird that I got that message. Anyone else had this?
