Q: Do I really need wood.
A: Well wood is a quick,easy way to obtain things like barrels when starting out. However stone is a MUCH more plentiful object and you can make almost anything out of it. Replace barrels with pots, wooden buckets with stone ones and so on. You should keep a decent stockpile of wood for charcoal and beds as they are the only things that are needed in a fort that requires wood. So yes you do need wood but only for beds and charcoal if you can't find any coal. However you should keep a stockpile just in case.
- A': Since when have buckets been made from stone? While metal buckets are an option, they're usually a bit more convoluted for early forts to put together. A Carpenter's Shop and 30 points of wood brought on embark can easily pound out enough buckets to cover most of your early fortress needs. You'll definitely want buckets eventually, as mugs, jugs, pots, and barrels are all useless for bringing water to wounded dwarves - only a sterilized medical bucket will do. --MoogleDan 12:25, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Fort-dependent[edit]
Ahh, this depends so much on the fort. I prefer to have my forts' hallways crispy clean... so I run out of stone and end up having to dig up new "stockpiles" to get more. Dree12 02:55, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
