Though '''moss''' is in-game, its cause is currently unknown. Moss potentially appears after a long amount of time, such as after [[Reclaim fortress mode|reclaim]]s.

Many dwarf scientist have spectulated that the so called "moss" is actually beards that fall off the dwarves once they get older and lose thier hair.  The many dwarven parasites that live in the berad, feasting off the dwarfs spilt food and drinks, eventually die of starvation and rot, turning the beard green.

* Temperate Conifer [[Forest]] (Warm Woodlands)

* Freezing Woodlands

Actual observation of moss seems to be very rare, though this may simply be due to not waiting long enough - in previous versions, it appeared at the same time as items being scattered during reclaim, and the amount of moss to appear depended on the amount of time passed since the last visit.
