This article is about an older version of DF. |
Template:Elven When a dwarf has been unhappy enough, he'll decide it has been enough for him and throw a tantrum. Tantruming dwarves will cancel any job they may be doing at the moment and will start misbehaving, which includes starting fist fights (with the possibility of severely injuring other dwarves), toppling and destroying buildings or hurting pets. This is of course illegal, and they will be imprisoned or flogged for their behaviour. But even though they are punished, if their punishment is more harsh than usual their death (or the results of their misbehaviour) can cause another wave of tantrums, and your dwarves will begin a process known as a tantrum spiral which will almost certainly destroy your fotress.
Anatomy of a tantrum spiral (In extreme circumstances, usually.)
Dwarf A, a craftsdwarf gets the urge to build a mysterious contruction, but alas, there is no cloth and aluminum to be had.
Dwarf A throws a tantrum, punching out dwarf B and destroying the bed of Dwarf C.
Dwarf B, now minorly injured, is in his bed resting.
Dwarf C, now angry throws a tantrum and puches dwarf D and E
Dwarf D, now angry throws a tantrum, destroying the craftsdwarf's workshop of dwarf F.
Dwarf E, a noble has charges brought upon dwarves C, who punched him and dwarf A, who started this. As a result, dwarf A was badly injuerd by the hammerdwarf, and dwarf C shall be locked up for the next 6 monthes.
Dwarf F, who has his craftdwarf workshop destroyed, throws an tantrum outside and procedes to beat up dwarf G, but is interupted by a goblin siege which kills them both.
Dwarf H, the wife of dwarf G, is troubled by her husband's death, goes into melancholy and attemps to commit suicide, badly injuring herself.
Dwarves I and J, the closest friends of dwarf G are also greatly troubled by his death.
Dwarf I tantrums and beats up dwarf K, who is now badly injured.
Dwarf J, a championchampion soldier tantrums and kills dwaves K,L and a the pet dog of dwarf O.
Dwarf M, the husband of dwarf L, tantrums and puches out dwarf A.
Dwarf A tantrums again and kills dwarf N.
Dawrf O, disturbed by the lack of ale being produced as a result of all the fighting and the death of his pet tantrums next to a 7 story high staircase, throwing himself and dwarf M down the staircase to thier deaths.
Summary:
Fotress at the start: 15 "normal" dwarves and a dog.
Fortress after tantrum spiral: 1 dawrf locked up in jail 3 dwarves are injuerd 6 dwarves are dead 5 dwarves are unaffected, for the moment, but they will probally tantrum later. the dog died.
As a result of not having cloth and aluminum, 2/5 of your dwarves have died, and almost 1/2 of your remaining dwarves can not work.
Tantrum spirals are your dwarves way of saying that you need to try giving your dwaves what they want next time. However, if you give your dwarves a nice bedroom, dining hall, nice food and make sure they don't die to often, you can almost certaintly avoid this source of incurable source of fun!
