So I've been doing some science! on an adventuring bard and have added a couple attributes to the speaker, singer, and musician pages. Verify Drowning when swimming will increase toughness.[edit]
To test this:
Build "Bridge" in Adventurer mode over river.
When you swim under bridge, you will begin drowning.
Move back and forth under bridge whilst coming up for breath on either side.
Avoid fighting all those crocodiles.
Seemed to Increase toughness from Above Average to High to Superior very quickly (about one or two days spent swimming).
Done with a Legendary skill in swimming.

Water - Wall - Floor - Wall - Water
