Mosaics make use of different colored floor tiles to create large and possibly quite intricate images or patterns on your floors. These are for style rather than function - although floor mosaics increase architectural wealth, they have no practical use and use up a lot of space and possibly resources. Nonetheless, they are a cool feature to have.
The Dwarven Mosaic Assistant is useful for converting images into working mosaics.
Programs such as "Microsoft Paint" or "Photoshop" can also be used. Simply save the image that you want to turn into a mosaic as a "16 color bitmap", or reduce the color depth to "16 colors", and you will be able to see what the image would look like in Dwarf Fortress.
