Weather changes with seasons, brings wet, cold, hot, and dry conditions.
Weather can be turned off by editing init.txt. This takes some load off of the CPU and can result in noticeably faster game play.
They will slowly cover most of the map with snow, and any dwarf caught in one will get an unhappy thought from it.
(please add information what game features are removed when turning off weather by init file, and what consequences this has.)
Rain
Rain is an event occurring at random intervals. The message "It has started raining" appears when it begins to rain. Rain has no effect other than causing bad thoughts to dwarves caught in the rain while outside. Raining is indicated by random outside ground tiles turning blue for one step. Rain can be disabled, along with all weather effects, by setting the WEATHER game option from the init file.
Contrary to what one might assume, rain is strictly a water related weather event which does not have different levels of intensity. Due to this rain does not contribute to catsplosion or dogsplosion in any condition.
As of the current versionv0.27.176.38c, rain does not fill murky pools. It is planned that rain will evenually create water.
Rainfall occurs in temperate to scorching maps.
Snow
In winter, instead of raining it will snow. Snowing has very similar effects to rain, but instead of leaving "wet" squares, it will cover outdoor tiles with snow, including frozen pond tiles.
Snowstorms will occasionally occur in winter on temperate to freezing maps.
