The ore of adamantine is highly valuable, to the point that the game pops up a special notification when you find it. Its discovery is both a boon and a bane; it has a massive value even unrefined, and gives a large number of bonuses to armor and weapons that are made from it when processed. The downside is that digging too deeply will trigger a certain spoiler, among other things, and the fact that it only appears in relatively small quantities. Additionally, finding this material will cause the King to arrive shortly afterward, disguised as a peasant, which can be troublesome for a young fortress not properly equipped to satisfy his high room value requirements, potentially leading to his (or her) insanity.
Its high melting point means you can easily use it to build magma-safe mechanisms and floodgates, but this is not recommended due to its scarcity.
You always get a piece of raw adamantine when you mine it out, no matter how skilled the miner is.
