This article is about an older version of DF.

A waterfall is a special map tile which occurs in special offshoots along the cave river and constantly produces mist. Waterfalls otherwise behave the same as ordinary river tiles - creatures that fall into them will begin to drown if they cannot swim, and creatures who drown in them will vanish without a trace.

Unlike in later versions, waterfalls do not actually produce water, so it is safe to build bridges over them and create meeting halls at which your Dwarves may congregate and receive additional happy thoughts.

Due to a bug, waterfalls may be placed on the wrong Z-level, causing them to not generate mist. The following patch for version 0.23.130.23a fixes this for newly-generated fortresses:
