Chitin is a material of an insects carapace, much like the shell of a lobster. It's main supply is from butchered Giant cave spiders and giant desert scorpions or more realistically from caravan. Your dwarves can use it as a substitute for leather and shell.

This article is about an older version of DF.

Chitin is the material of an insect's carapace, but in Dwarf Fortress it is identical to leather in all but name.

Since in DF this only comes from butchering giant insects like giant cave spiders and giant desert scorpions, it is quite valuable (x10 multiplier) as a raw material, especially compared to most other leathers. Caravans occasionally carry chitin as a trade good, but especially if requested from a liaison.
