Wikipedia article

Galena ore can be smelted into lead and silver bars at a Smelter.

When galena ore is smelted, it will always produce one unit of lead bars. There is a fifty percent chance that the smelting operation will also produce one unit of silver bars in addition to the lead which it always produces.

Since galena is an ore of silver, it can be also used in a reaction as silver ore.

It is worth smelting billon or electrum from galena, because this guarantees you'll get the use (and value) of the silver. For example, smelting 2 gold nuggets and 2 galena will give 2 gold bars (value 2x150), 2 lead bars (value 2x10) and, on average, 1 silver bar (value 50), for a total value of 370, but smelting them to electrum will give 4 electrum bars with a value of 400.
