Miners will '''channel underneath another miner''' if you let them. This bug is preventable, once you understand how digging works: dwarves always begin with the northwest most tile and work their way south until all designations in that column are complete.
'''This issue has been fixed in version {{version|0.27.169.33g}}. If for some reason you still need it, the guide is below.'''

As of version {{version|0.27.169.33g}}, it is possible that the reverse problem will happen if you have more than one dwarf digging a channel in a closed room - that is, that channels may be dug around a dwarf, leaving him trapped on a single tile hovering on the side of a room.  The techniques below will still prevent this from happening.

The simplest way to prevent this from happening is to turn off the mining of all dwarves save one. Here are some other, less restrictive solutions:

Designate channels in single columns. Leave the miners room to escape. This is also a good way to prevent your miners from being isolated.

The total number of tasks required to complete this method is higher than the above one, but allows your dwarves to safely channel without you keeping tabs on them. Create stairs leading to the lower level at the entrance, designate ramps on the lower level, use the z-designate to remove those ramps, and finally channel the stairway on the original level.
