A shrub is a plant which grows naturally, as opposed to a domesticated farm crop. Shrubs will sprout underground on muddy rough cavern floor if there are spores in the air from an underground cave feature, or will sprout on the surface on top of grass when in an appropriate biome. Shrubs are instrumental for plant gathering and in environments with a significant amount of vegetation they can be an excellent supply of food. Gathering shrubs also serves to provide a supply of plants for use in making surface crops, such as longland grass, wild strawberry, and the like.

In Fortress Mode, it is not possible to know what type of plant a shrub is until it has been harvested. In Adventure Mode, however, all shrubs are clearly identifiable.
