How to drill trough the Aquifer

Hans Lemurson and QuantumMenace have developed a method how to drill through an aquifer of unknown thickness. In my opinion their original forum thread describing this method is extremely hard to learn from, so before you end up like me spending two days figuring out what the DF gurus actually meant, here is a more newbie-friendly version.

Even in this newbie-friendly tutorial it won't harm if you first train this on an embark which you don't mean to play after you've made it through the aquifer. Therefore I suggest you take this embark config:

Suggested Embark config

  • 1 Proficient Miner
  • 3 Proficient Masons
  • 1 Proficient Carpenter

sell the anvil to buy:

  • 30+ stones (e.g. granite)
  • 10+ logs (e.g. willow)

Make sure you have at least:

  • 1 (battle) axe
  • 1 pick

to cut down trees and mine

Should you decide to play this embark further, I suggest you take also a Proficient Grower and a Proficient Mechanic.
