This article is about an older version of DF.

Magma mist is the !!Fun!! yellow mist created when debris from a cave-in splashes into magma or when a minecart skips across magma, but, unlike water, not when a magma falls down a Z-level. It sets on fire all non-fire-resistant creatures that share a tile with it, and in earlier versions would instantly kill most creatures who breathed it in. Luckily, it generally disappears quickly, as not much will usually be produced; cave-ins only cause a small amount of it.

It is called lava mist when a cave-in falls into lava, but is arguably similar.

Preventative Measures

If you are being careful around magma, it isn't very likely that you'll run into magma mist at all, let alone have to worry about your dwarves breathing it in. The simplest thing you can do to prevent it is to watch out when dealing with mining above magma, or channeling above magma in particular.

Various uses

Magma mist can be used as an ignition device on various targets if you do not want to use magma itself and wait till it evaporates.

Make a path to your fortress, just next to a pool of magma. Drop one (or several) constructed floor(s) in the magma when an enemy walks on the path. A cave-in will happen, possibly creating enough magma mist to set the target on fire, if the target isn't already knocked over in magma by the cave-in dust.

Magma mist tends to live longer than cave-in dust, so maybe a well-timed preemptive cave-in will ensure that the target does not plunge into magma, but is set on fire, making retrieval of items easier. Just make sure the item is NOT burning.
