Can't get this to work...[edit]
Whenever I queue up a "Capture a live fish" task, the person who picks it up walks over to my animal stockpile (which is on land) and just stands next to a trap until he gets bored and switches to another task. I do have fishable lakes and I do have a glass terrarium that is unused and non-forbidden. -Fuzzy 11:30, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
- I had this issue too, after the season changed my dorf ran over and grabbed a salmon or somesuch. I'm guessing there needs to be a fish in valid fishing areas for this job to complete. Otherwise they stand around and wait for a fish to spawn so they can capture it. HeWhoIsPale 11:57, 12 September 2008 (EDT)

- Just so we're clear, to successfully capture a live fish you must:
- A.) Have an empty animal trap
- B.) Have a dwarf with the "fishing" labor enabled
- C.) Have a valid, accessible fishing area with capturable fish in it
- D.) Have a place to deposit the fish? A pond? An aquarium? An animal storage stockpile? This is the part I think I get hung up on.--Zipdog 04:22, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

- I just finally got my fisherdwarves to catch live fish, and now they're actually doing it pretty well, I got three fish caught within like 20 minutes. The final thing I was missing was that the fishing area appears to need to be an actual designated fishing zone, even though that's not required for regular fishing. As soon as I toggled the fishing designation on my previously existing water source zone, my fisherdwarf who had been standing on top of the animal stockpile ran outside and caught a fish. I don't think you even need an active, empty aquarium for it to work, although obviously you'll want one eventually--I filled up all my current aquariums with fish, and they've caught another fish. I won't be totally convinced until they catch a few more, but right now all fisherdwarves are sleeping or on break etc. Mister Six 18:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

- Well, I was about to report that I had one free aquarium, one live fish sitting in a trap in a stockpile, and a fisherdwarf just caught another live fish, thus proving that you don't necessarily need a free place to put it... but then I remembered I just designated a pond for my dwarves to fill. So that may have interfered with the results. I do have another thing to report though, previously a trap with a live fish in it had been sitting in a stockpile while I procrastinated on moving it to an aquarium, and then when I was checking on my animal stockpile I noticed it had turned into a single raw fish, and was sitting on top of the trap instead of in it. So it died in the trap. I'm not sure if this behavior was known already. It may have happened at season change, it was pretty soon after that that I noticed it, but I can't say for sure it wasn't already dead by then. Mister Six 20:56, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
