New trainable animals?[edit]

Can anyone confirm that anything other than dogs are trainable in the new version (without modding)? I looked through the raws, and there's still no [TRAINABLE] flag on any other critters.

Catch a live land animal[edit]

What does this command actually do? I tried it with an animal trainer (no hunters) and he didn't seem to do anything. Is the only way to catch wild animals for taming using cage traps, or can a hunter (or for example wrestlers) knock out animals in melee and catch them that way? Or does the animal trainer play any part here?

Well, you can use walls to funnel them into the traps. That's actually the way it was more or less done in 2D DF, except channels were used to force them through the cage traps. You CAN spam the traps on the landscape, of course. -Kefkakrazy 01:11, 28 November 2007 (EST)

Taming Vermin[edit]

The article states that it is impossible to train vermin caught through the "Capture Live Land Animal" order. This is false. I've upwards of ten tamed rats sitting around in traps.

I don't know about vermin, but I know I have a tame alligator wandering around my fortress. SHe hasn't been accepted as a pet, but she is available for it. I just have too many pest for my dwarves right now >_> --Aescula 05:18, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

Read again - the labor is used solely at a butcher's shop, but the skill can be used to construct a kennel. (I know, and I agree...) :/ --Albedo 02:56, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Tame a Large Land Animal[edit]

While low on food supplies, I attempted to tame a captured Macaque and Groundhog... but the job was cancelled, citing that there was no food to give. As there was nothing on the main article about this I thought I'd leave this here for someone who knows more about it than I do to explore and explain (for instance, if there's a particular type of food they will exclusively accept).

Availabilty[edit]

I tested this last night, before you train a hunting or war dog it must not be "unavailable" in the animal status menu, otherwise the job will cancel. unsigned comment by Enjia2000

I've trained dozens of war dogs without ever making them available for adoption, so you're probably doing something wrong. Do you have them chained or caged? --Quietust 22:38, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
I am using 40d16, what are you using? because you MUST set them to available or else the trainer will cancel the job. having a uncaged tame dog is NOT enough to start the job. Yes, i know adoption deals with availability but if the only thing i change is the availability of a animal for the job to complete it's very easy to draw this conclusion. --Enjia2000 00:55, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
I just did a brand new embark, bringing a dog, a dwarf with animal training, and enough materials to build a kennel. I built the kennel, verified that the dog was NOT "Available", then ordered a war animal trained. The dog became a war dog. This was done using 40d. --Quietust 00:52, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
In case you doubt me, I've recorded a video here. Note that, in said video, the first dog frequently walked away from the kennel while being trained, likely forcing the trainer to start over (probably due to low skill, not being able to hold the animal's attention) - with enough interruptions, it might be possible for the task to cancel. --Quietust 14:25, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
