If I'm not mistaken, a dwarf can carry around ammo in one hand, its just that using a quiver frees up that hand. Correct? --Bouchart 17:58, 15 April 2008 (EDT)

AFAIK they hold training ammo in their hand when shooting at archery range. But to hold a real ammo they need quivers. Marksdwarf without a quiver will take traning ammo and train, but at the time of emergency he will drop it and run to his station point, carrying no ammo with him. I can confirm that a dwarf can carry ammo in his hand. I have one hunter who doesn't have a quiver and he's carrying his steel bolts. I haven't supervised him enough to know if it hinders him in any way, though. Just check on him: he's sleeping with a steel bolt clutched in his hand...--Klox 00:00, 18 May 2008 (EDT)

It may be some mix of those two. It seems like dwarves are reluctant to fire in a military sense with bolts in their hand. I have hundreds of bolts of both metal and wood around, but my quiverless dwarves chase down Rhesus Macaques and beat them to death with the side of their bow. The ones with quivers fire ammunition.--Dadamh 14:16, 2 June 2008 (EDT)

My dwarves also train without a quiver. I'm going to update the page to reflect that, and indicate the confusion about whether they are hindered by the lack of a quiver. --Aristoi 11:36, 12 August 2008 (EDT)

A co-worker of mine noted an interesting effect. A crossbow-wielding dwarf carried a "stack" in his quiver that consisted of a single bolt. Once fired, the dwarf ran back for another stack-of-one, fired it off and ran back again. He kept doing this until he picked up a stack of multiple bolts. It would seem that a quiver can contain a stack of bolts, but can not be used to combine single bolts into a stack of multiple bolts. – unsigned comment by Frewfrux

Stack-merging is a much-requested feature which Toady has yet to implement. Be sure to forbid the use of used ammunition (o-F-p) to avoid one-bolt syndrome. Better still, slaughter yourself some elephants and fashion 80-bolt stacks out of their bones ;-) --Maximus 01:08, 21 October 2008 (EDT)
