DF2014 Talk:Magma forge
A magma man crawled up through either my magma smelter or my magma forge, even though the openings were under impassable tiles. Not sure which one, but probably the principle applies equally to either building. Magma crabs or other critters never did it in two years, though. In any case I'm changing the text in both buildings that claims it's safe. It's possible that the magma man crawled up through 7/7 magma that was either 1 z-level deep, or 2, in case that matters. - I'm guessing the magma man destroyed either the forge or smelter, then entered your fortress through the (no longer impassible) tile. There are certain circumstances where building destroyers can destroy buildings from below (like when there is an alternate path to the level of the building). Alternatively, it may be possible for swimming creatures to move vertically-diagonal if you built an up/down stairway next to the hole. --Loci (talk) 19:32, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
- Nope! All buildings in my forge were intact. Three magma smelters, three magma forges, a total of six channeled holes all under impassible tiles of buildings. Interesting I noticed later that one of the channels had been over a wall next to the lava--so there was a ramp leading up beneath my building. Don't know if that would matter. But, building destruction was not the issue here. Sowelu (talk) 02:30, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- I've seen reports of this happening in previous versions, so it's possible that covering up the magma tiles with impassable workshop tiles is something that has never actually worked (similar to using fortifications to filter creatures out of water/magma channels). --Quietust (talk) 15:32, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

- I tested this in v0.42.05 with the denizens of the deep. Despite being directly below the workshops with tempting dwarf targets above, they did not move up into the fortress. It's likely your magma man entered some other way.--Loci (talk) 23:29, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Placement guide.[edit]
This might be a little silly, but I've read over the article, and I can't quite picture how the forge is supposed to be placed. Can there be a simple picture, like how screw pumps go? 76.125.252.80 20:07, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
- The light-green and dark-green 'x's shown in the infobar on the right of the article display the passable and impassible tiles respectively. (The same 'x's, or whatever your tileset uses in place of 'x's, appear in-game when you go to build the workshop too.) For this particular workshop, you would want to place the hole under the center-left or center-right tile--tiles corresponding to the location of '4' and '6' on a keypad.--Loci (talk) 23:29, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
TODO[edit]
You need to change the build shortcuts of b-w-v, the magma forge isn't there in 43.03.
I just haven't discovered the magma see.
