How is it possible that after a black bear attacked in the first month of my fortress, killing my woodcutter and a farmer, while badly wounding my expedition leader/carpenter, somehow became my most successful fortress yet? --Smartmo 01:49, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Idea for your projects! Outlast a bear by sitting on the ground with your back next to a tree, wielding nothing but a shield. Turn close combat on so not to kill the bear. Strangle it to death after it dies of over-excursion. BONUS: Try it with a pack of wolves. SUPER BONUS: Bowmen. --Demaster72 02:16, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Why is "[Building] an elaborate construct to fill a fortress of 80+ dwarves with water" with no survivors harder than you'd think? --Zort 02:32, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't seal the entrance. A few got out, but a few ambushes fixed that. I see your point though, I'm just trying to put filler in my main page. I'll fix it. --Smartmo
Orc mod[edit]
Have you tried the Orc mod? I never "lost" a fortress until I tried that mod. They are trap-avoid (so traps don't work) and they don't feel pain. They are very agile, too, which makes it hard. Once you figure out how to deal with orcs, though, you laugh at goblins (but not the ranged units!).--Kwieland 17:27, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- I'll consider it, but the real problem I have is that it takes so long to make a good fortress, but nothing happens once I do. I'm currently looking up megaconstructions on the Challenges page. Finding a goal, something to try to achieve, would make this game so much more interesting. In fact, I'll add that to my main page. --Smartmo 21:15, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
"Defense" rewrite[edit]
"Defense" rewrite[edit]
I've finished the final push to the basic layout - 4 pages total. Here's the "form letter" I posted on each discussion page.
New Pages, new organization
There had been about 5-6 pages on "defense", and articles and advice on various topics were scattered and repeated across all of them. This is an effort to re-organize them into 4 tightly defined and user-friendly topics using current DF wiki naming conventions - a General guide and overview Defense guide, and 3 articles on specific design - layout and architecture (Defense design), traps (Trap design), and specific advice on organizing your military (Military design).
Discussion from any pages removed or renamed will be placed (or linked) under one of those four. --Albedo 06:21, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Let's keep the discussion back under the Talk:Fortress defense page, where we were talking before. I PM'd user:Mikaka w/ this as well. I may have ramrodded the initial rewrite/re-organization, but I know I've left some weak spots and would appreciate a good critique and editor(s). --Albedo 07:58, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
