The position of sheriff opens once the population of your fortress reaches 20. The sheriff will subdue and imprison lawbreaking dwarves.
When your fortress reaches 50 dwarves, the sheriff will be promoted to Captain of the guard.
Sheriff can be designated through the nobles screen.
