The Dwarf Fortress Map Archive (shorthand DFMA) is a repository and online viewer for player created maps and movies exported from Dwarf Fortress (it also provides some fairly interesting imaging tools for maps). The map archive serves as the most efficient way to serve maps and in-game videos to other players of the game. Uploads to the site can be commented on and tiles on the maps can be tagged as "points of interest" by both uploaders and viewers.

Uploading a map[edit]

  1. If you wish to export your local map:
    1. Load your fortress, then press Esc and scroll down to the "Export Local Image" option.
    2. The game's algorithm selects all z-levels with units or buildings on them for export; depending on what you want, you can toggle which layers to export to your liking. Once you are ready, export. This will create a number of BMP files in your Dwarf Fortress root install folder (the same one that the game's main EXE is located in), with each image representing a layer.

    1. Unfortunately it is not possible to export the world map while you have a fortress saved in that world. An easy workaround is to duplicate the save file and abandon the fortress. After you have exported the world map, you can simply move the save file back into its folder, and your fort will be playable again.
    2. Press p to "Export image/info" at either the world generation acceptance screen or the main Legends mode screen. Legends mode also provides you with the ability to export detailed maps showcasing certain map features, which you can also do.
  3. Download Shadowlord's DF Map Compressor (version 3.3.4). The program can be run remotely, but you will need an unzipper because it comes in ZIP format. This is actually a pretty comprehensive tool, and allows lossless compression to and from a number of formats, but for our purposes the archive only reads .FDF-MAP files. Compress image(s) to .fdf-map file, then navigate to an image and select it. The program will ask you where you want to place the resultant file, then find all related image files and collate them into one file. You may wish to check "Delete images after compressing" to get rid of the original BMP files; you can also Preview .fdf-map file (before uploading)..
    Troubleshooting: The map compressor should work with all tilesets, graphic or otherwise, but if it is giving you trouble try reverting to the game's basic character set. Games running on version 0.23.130.23a and earlier will not work properly because they are missing file definitions that the program needs.
  4. Once you have a working .FDF-MAP file, Visit Markavian's DF Map Archive (or just navigate there yourself on the web) and hit Upload Map (direct link). Fill out the form, hit Upload Map, and your file should appear on the site's server shortly.

For instance, the original tragedy mule demonstration file is 1637 KB in CMV format, 616 KB in CCMV format, and 292 KB in FCMV format. The DF Map Compressor can also compress CMV files into CCMV and FCMV ones, but as the Archive only accepts CMVs and compresses them into CCMV form itself, this is mostly for show.

  1. If you have a graphic tileset enabled, disable it. Unlike .FDF-MAPs, the CMV movie format will not play nice with these, and will cause all sorts of strange output.
  2. Record a movie.
