- items not owned by you (caravan, enemies)
- items used in buildings, traps etc. (including stuff set for trade in the depot)
- items forbidden
- more?
in the detailed view they split in
- red
- cyan
- violet
- ...
- grey for imported or otherwise not selfmade stuff
- brown for items created by you
So, for your barrels, they are most likely part of a dyers workshop or forbidden - just [z]oom to them to check
