A wasteland is defined by Wikipedia as "a landscape devoid of nutrients, soil and/or moisture". They are arid, barren areas; although stone is likely to be plentiful, it may be difficult to find soil or a reliable water source. Additionally, because trees and other plant life is usually scarce at best in these areas, wood and seeds may have to be imported.
