I've added a "tutorial" to the main page, and for now am moving this subsection intact to here for improvement - right now it's not completely clear what the distinction is between brown and black, and short-dashes and long. If someone can improve the text/commentary in this so it's clear to someone who has never built a windmill (part of our target audience), feel free to replace it. (At least label it "Unusual ''windmill'' behavior"!) --[[User:Albedo|Albedo]] 21:38, 21 October 2009 (UTC) | I've added a "tutorial" to the main page, and for now am moving this subsection intact to here for improvement - right now it's not completely clear what the distinction is between brown and black, and short-dashes and long. hanging windmills?[edit]
Is it possible to have a 'hanging' (for better reliability of power transfer) windmill partially supported so it won't fall?
i.e.
Windmill: XXX XXX XXX Floor beneath windmill: +++ + + +++ Layer below: ... .*. ...
Random832 10:18, 13 October 2008 (EDT)s ground
- I don't think so. Walling every tile except power-transfer in the middle still leaves it thinking it's "hanging". It wants "ground" and no substitute will do! Corona688 15:12, 13 October 2008 (EDT)
- In the diagram below,
- 1 should work fine,
- 2 works as long as dwarves can reach the building site. Any tile adjacent to the windmill will do.
- 3 is valid, but has no connection between the machinery, and
- 4 can't be placed.
Side view - = - - = - * * * * - = - - = - 1 2 3 4
For 4, what about this?
Side view _ * - = - 4
And then the floor can be removed or left in place; whichever you prefer. Random832 16:36, 14 October 2008 (EDT)
water wheels power[edit]
Is it possible to have a pump create flow for a waterwheel, which is powered by that same waterwheel? If waterwheels provide 90 power and pumps only use 10, that would leave 80 left over. (but it breaks the laws of thermodynamics, which may or may not apply in DF)
- Yes. Be warned, however, that getting it to consistently produce max power can be rather difficult. --Quietust 16:46, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
Diagram unclear[edit]
I've added a "tutorial" to the main page, and for now am moving this subsection intact to here for improvement - right now it's not completely clear what the distinction is between brown and black, and short-dashes and long. If someone can improve the text/commentary in this so it's clear to someone who has never built a windmill (part of our target audience), feel free to replace it. (At least label it "Unusual windmill behavior"!) --Albedo 21:38, 21 October 2009 (UTC) (edit: diagram replaced @ bottom of article w/ edit - feel free to take a look and proof-read/improve.)--Albedo 22:21, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
Gear Assembly vs Axle[edit]
I'm wondering if it's possible to connect machine systems entirely with Gear Assemblies in lieu of any horizontal/vertical axles at all. More time-consuming, but it's not like there's any shortage of stone. ~~Loyal 01:25, 1 January 2010 (EST)
