This still seems bugged. I created a new dorm far from my barracks and caught two on-duty dwarfs running off to it to sleep on the floor. Ignoring their super awesome barracks or super awesome bedroom, or super awesome hospital.--[[User:Crossmr|Crossmr]] 13:47, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

I think it is supposed to be a bedroom for those poor fellows not owning a proper room and barracks are not used for this anymore. But I had trouble finding out if my assumption is correct, due to the current "any bed is a good bed, don't care about property" bug Matakuka 22:37, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

My dorfs slept in one when they didn't have their own bed, which I took as verification. What is this bug you speak of? That could make it impossible to verify. --Eagle0600 01:40, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
I had no dormitory, but rooms for nearly everyone. But instead of everyone going into his own room, chaos broke out. Maybe a dormitory would change it, I'll be testing it soon.Matakuka 21:03, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

AV template[edit]

Since dormitories are new, I'm removing the av template. 207.114.92.10 23:03, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

"This template is to be used on all pages that are game version specific." If you're not sure, read the template documentation. If anything, you should use it precisely because it is new. The general rule for pages that should have the av template is: "Does it relate to the game? If yes, apply av." --Eagle0600 01:39, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Dwarf preferences[edit]

It would seem that the dwarves don't take barracks vs dormitory as a hard rule. I had only a barracks and civilian dwarves used it, but when I created a dormitory they started using that preferentially. I would presume that military dwarves would operate in the reverse - prefer barracks but use dormitory if no barracks space available. --Krenn 01:35, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Furthermore, the barracks has military-specific options that the dorm just plain doesn't. Squads get their barracks assigned to them, so they really can't use a dorm. --Eagle0600 06:54, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
First fortress I started in 31.01, I set up a dormitory for my little bearded laborers. They used the beds there just fine. Later, I turned it into a barracks. The civvies were still perfectly fine with sleeping in those beds. Finally, I set up a hospital zone. It didn't matter whether I set the sleeping zone to "Dormitory" or "Barracks", everyone slept in the hospital beds. Weirdos... --Kagus 07:24, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
Did you test with multiple zones? When I have a hospital zone and a dormitory (no individual bedrooms), the dwarves will ONLY sleep in the dormitory, provided there are enough beds and they are not wounded. --Briess 07:27, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, the hospital zone was separate from the barracks/dormitory area. Regardless of what I set the intended sleeping area to (barracks or dorm), dwarves would sleep in unused hospital beds. The beds in the hospital weren't assigned as rooms, they were just sitting inside the hospital zone. It should be noted that the hospital was, in general, a shorter walk for most dwarves to get to. --Kagus 07:38, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Supposedly dwarves will chose to sleep in the hospital if it is more convienient than their other sleeping arrangements. From this I would assume that if the hospital were further away the dwarves would choose to sleep in the dormitory. Perhaps Briess was experiencing the hospital being further away from where his dwarves were working and so they chose to sleep in the dormitory for convienience. If people are concerned with where their dwarves sleep, the new burrow commands seem very interesting. --Corrundum 11:43, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
The bed-ownership bug was fixed, though dwarves without a bed may still sneak into owned beds. Now dwarves who own a bed won't use freely available beds even if they're falling asleep before they can get home; they sleep on the ground. Uzu Bash 00:12, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
