+ | The best way to train the furnace operator skill is to make coke at a smelter, using either bitiminus coal or lignite. Bitiminus coal uses one unit of fuel (either coke or charcoal) to make two units of coke, giving you a net gain of one fuel. Lignite uses one unit of fuel to get one unit of coke, giving a net gain of 0 fuel. By setting your operator to make a vast quantity of coke, he will train up his furnace operator skill rather quickly without using up any of your fuel reserves, which can be important on maps without easily accessable magma or a lack of trees. (Note: if you have magma available, it will be more worthwhile to have the operator smelt ore into bars instead of coke, as the coke will not be needed if you do not require fuel.) | ||

The furnace operator skill is used for the furnace tasks, such as melting metal ores into bars, Template:L metal items and creating metal Template:L. It is also used at the Template:L for creating Template:L and Template:L. Having a higher skill levels does not improve the output in any way. It only allows the task to be preformed faster.
Note that a separate labour, Template:L, is used for to make fuel from wood.
