The farming (fields) labor enables a Template:L to work at a Template:L to fertilize them with Template:L and/or plant Template:Ls which will then grow into harvestable plants. If your Template:L are configured to "Dwarves all harvest", then all dwarves will harvest plants, otherwise only dwarves with this labor enabled will participate.
