Lye is moved from buckets into a barrel if you have a food stockpile with "lye" enabled* and a spare barrel. One barrel can hold 50 units of lye. If the lye is disabled on the stockpile with the barrels however, the dwarves will take the buckets out of the barrel and relocate them to another stockpile if any exists. This can be used to render bugged lye "visible" again. | Lye is moved from buckets into a barrel if you have a food stockpile with "lye" enabled* and a spare barrel. Lye is a material used to make soap, and can also be used to make potash*. Lye is made by a lye maker at an ashery, and requires 1 bar of ash and an empty bucket. Ash is made from wood by a wood burner at a wood furnace.
- (* Although potash is more easily made directly from ash, which is also the precursor to lye.)
Lye is moved from buckets into a barrel if you have a food stockpile with "lye" enabled* and a spare barrel. One barrel can hold 50 units of lye. However, this is currently buggy - dwarves will often put the full bucket inside the pot. Unfortunately, this results in your dwarves becoming "blind" to that bucket and the lye inside, and it no longer appears in the stocks screen. If the lye is disabled on the stockpile with the barrels however, the dwarves will take the buckets out of the barrel and relocate them to another stockpile if any exists. This can be used to render bugged lye "visible" again. Another way to regain the bugged lye is to dump all the buckets inside the barrels, then later reclaiming them.
Since a bucket of lye can also be used directly to make soap, the simplest way to circumvent this issue is to make a separate food stockpile for lye only, and disallow barrels/pots on its settings.
Lye freezes in cold weather. You'll have to wait until it thaws in order to make soap. Careful application of magma can help to unfreeze lye.
- * Be aware: Lye is located under "Misc. Liquids" on the 2nd page of the Food Stockpile screen, and under Misc. Liquids (found among the other "food" items) in the [z] Stocks screen.
