Plump helmets are fast-growing purple mushrooms which are the staple food crop of most fortresses. They are edible raw, but can also be cooked in a kitchen or brewed into dwarven wine.
You should note that although it is possible to make farm plots in the sunshine, plump helmets won't grow outside a cave.
