Grass is a naturally occuring map tile found commonly across the surface of the world in temperate biomes. It is usually green, and found on top of soil types such as clay loam; even if you excavate the tile (using a channel). Grass apparently grows quickly and indicates that a tree might grow there, as opposed to tiles like loam which don't support trees. Dwarves walking over it will easily turn it to whatever tile the soil is made of. It will grow on any type of soil as long as the tile is considered "outside". Grass can catch fire.
