Lye is made by a dwarf with the lye making Template:L enabled at an Template:L, and requires 1 Template:L of Template:L and 1 Template:L. Ash is made from wood by a wood burner at a wood furnace.
Lye is used to make Template:L and Template:L, though potash can also be made directly from ash. Lye must be moved from the buckets into a Template:L to make soap. This should happen by itself, assuming an empty barrel and an appropriate stockpile are available.
