Smoothing rough stone is a simple way to increase the value of a room.
How to Smooth
First of all, in order to smooth stone, there needs to be a dwarf with the Stone Detailing labor active. Secondly, the stone to be smoothed needs to be designated (d->s). Note that constructions cannot be smoothed.
Follow Up
After a stone surface has been smoothed, it may be improved further by Template:L. This increases the room value even more, but has quality levels and thus should be performed only by skilled Template:L. Smoothed walls can also be carved into Template:L, allowing ranged soldiers (and enemies) to fire through them.
