The herbalist skill is used by dwarves with the plant gathering Template:L. They will gather from designated Template:Ls and harvest plants. Note that due to the new requirements for underground farming, plant gathering is now much more important than in previous versions.
Uses
Food Production
Herbalists are often used to help with food production in an early fortress as they do not require farm plots or other setup. This tactic works best in heavily forested areas, and is nearly worthless in badlands and deserts. While plant gathering is less efficient than Template:L and significantly less reliable, it also requires minimal space and provides a relatively immediate payoff in comparison.
Gathering Seeds
Plants gathered by herbalists can be eaten or processed to provide Template:Ls which can then be Template:L in outdoor farms. For this reason, it is popular (if not necessary) early in a fort's existence if one wants to grow outdoor crops.
