v50.14 · v0.47.05 This article is about the current version of DF.Note that some content may still need to be updated. |
Lye is a material used to make soap, and can also be used to make potash*. Lye is made by a lye maker at an ashery, and requires 1 bar of ash and an empty bucket. Ash is made from wood by a wood burner at a wood furnace.
- (* Although potash is more easily made directly from ash, which is also the precursor to lye - this saves the unnecessary intermediate step of making lye first.)
Lye is moved from buckets into a barrel if you have a food stockpile with "lye" enabled* and a spare barrel. One barrel can hold 50 units of lye. However, this is currently buggy - dwarves will often put the full bucket inside the pot. Unfortunately, this results in your dwarves becoming "blind" to that bucket and the lye inside.
Since a bucket of lye can also be used directly to make soap, the simplest way to circumvent this issue is to make a separate food stockpile for lye only, and disallow barrels/pots on its settings.
Lye freezes in cold weather. You'll have to wait until it thaws in order to make soap. Careful application of magma can help to unfreeze lye.
- * Be aware: Lye is located under "Misc. Liquids" on the 2nd page of the Food Stockpile screen, and under Misc. Liquids (found among the other "food" items) in the [z] Stocks screen.
