What's the exact process behind milking a Purring Maggot? I managed to bag one in an animal trap, but milking jobs fail if it's inside an animal trap in the stockpile or a built cage. Does it need to be tamed by the Dungeon Master first?

You need a purring maggot, either inside a trap or a cage; you need a farmers workshop; you need a bucket. If you have all three of these things, the milking should proceed. Supposedly, taming the purring maggot makes it unmilkable, but I haven't done that yet (though I have successfully milked one). The milk goes into the bucket, which can then get emptied into a barrel (if you want to milk multiple maggots, I suggest having one barrel and a few buckets). Vaniver 22:44, 26 February 2009 (EST)

I believe that if you carefully control the buckets+barrels, especially the barrel, then the milk will get combined automatically into a larger stack --- in the barrel. This is almost required, because dwarves will eat wild purring maggots almost as fast as cheese. So, for example, my milking operation involved purring maggots behind forbidden doors (opened once a season, locked behind the milker until milking complete) in a remote-location with a bucket+animal stockpile and a milk-only stockpile next to the workshop dedicated to milking. In retrospect you should find a dwarf who detests purring maggots to do the milking -- less chance of them getting a hankering for raw maggot. --Wyriel 00:40, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Milk can be cooked directly into prepared meals, and some dwarves like certain types of milk more than they like cheese made from it. --Quietust 12:46, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
