Steel can be smelted at a Template:L by a Template:L with the Template:L labor activated. It is an extremely durable Template:L and is highly Template:L, worth just as much as Template:L.
Steel is one of few Template:L that can resist melting when immersed in Template:L. Template:Ls and Template:L made from steel are 33% stronger than equivalent Template:L objects, making it second only to Template:L for creating military equipment.
The method for making steel may seem complex but it is an accurate representation of the process, and not too bad when the overall utility of the resulting material is considered.
Recipe
The recipe for steel is:
- One Template:L Template:L
- One Template:L bar
- One Template:L material
- One of Template:L or Template:L (can be used simultaneously as Template:L for a non-magma Template:L operation)
When the above items are combined at a Template:L, the product is two bars of steel; the Template:L and flux are consumed in the reaction, but the pig iron and iron are combined into steel.
Production chain
(This assumes you have 2 iron bars, from either Template:Ling iron Template:L or Template:L for them.)
The following amount of materials are needed to produce two steel bars:
- Two iron bars
- Two units of Template:L
- Two units Template:L (either Template:L)
The following steps are performed to produce two steel bars from the above materials:
- Make pig iron bars (creates one pig iron bar)
- One iron bar
- One unit of Template:L
- One unit of Template:L (either Template:L)
- Make steel bars (creates two steel bars)
- One iron bar
- One pig iron bar
- One unit of Template:L
- One unit of Template:L (either Template:L)
The tasks Make Pig Iron Bars and Make Steel Bars use the same materials at either smelter. At a normal Template:L, the Template:L is needed as a reagent but will also act as the Template:L needed for the smelting operation. At a Template:L, the Template:L is needed only as a reagent.
Once steel bars are produced, they are used just like other normal metal bars. The Template:L and Template:L reagents are only needed during the smelting.
If you have embarked on a map which does not have ready access to coal or flux, another possible, though expensive, way to obtain Steel is to buy out all the low quality steel weapons and armor from the Dwarven caravan and designate them for melting. For more information on melting recovery rates see Template:L
