(this article described the wrong kind of bars - import from 40d and prune out unverified stuff for now)
(I almost made the same mistake - "bars" are metal bars, always plural. There is no "bar" in game. And there are no longer "horizontal bars", so only "vertical bars". Moving to that title)

'''Bars''' are a grill or lattice of strong poles that prevent the passage of everything but liquids and light. A [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/portcullis portcullis] or classic barred prison door is a good example.  No creature or object can pass through bars{{verify}}. Bars can be used vertically as walls or on a flat surface as floor grates.

Bars can be used to block off channels intended for the passage of {{L|water}}, or {{L|magma}} if they are built from {{L|magma-safe}} materials, whether to keep dwarves from falling in or to keep {{L|fire imp|bad creatures}} from invading along them.  They share much in common with {{L|fortification}}s, which can also be used for the same purpose.  Bars can also be fired through like fortifications by {{L|Marksman|marksdwarves}} and {{L|siege|enemies}} alike, and provide no protection for either (unlike {{L|fortification}}s).

'''Bars''' (always pluralized) is the unit of measure for {{L|metal}}s, as the result of {{L|smelt}}ing {{L|ore}}s, and of {{L|fuel}}, used to power {{L|smelter}}s and in {{L|steel}} production.  Bars are stored in a bar/block {{L|stockpile}}, and can be placed 10 to the {{L|bin}}.  Bars can be used as a construction material.

However, they can be linked to a {{L|lever}} or {{L|pressure plate}}, allowing them to retract when the {{L|mechanism}} is activated.

Bars can be built via the {{L|building|{{k|b}}}} menu by a dwarf with the {{L|Hauling#Furniture_hauling|furniture hauling}} labor. They can be constructed as either "Vertical Bars" ({{k|B}}) or horizontal "Floor Bars" ({{k|Alt}} + {{k|b}}). Floor bars are intended to be built over Open Space, though it is possible to build them directly on top of an existing floor (to increase {{L|Room|room value}}, for instance).  Both Floor Bars and Vertical Bars are built with one metal {{L|bar}} by any dwarf with the Furniture Hauling labor enabled.

This article is about an older version of DF.
(For information on Template:Ls, see that article.)

Bars (always pluralized) is the unit of measure for Template:Ls, as the result of Template:Ling Template:Ls, and of Template:L, used to power Template:Ls and in Template:L production. Bars are stored in a bar/block Template:L, and can be placed 10 to the Template:L. Bars can be used as a construction material.
