Trapping is used to catch small creatures (those so small that they are represented by a . ) This function is performed at a kennels or butcher shop, and requires animal traps (not cages).
Like in .23, there is a bug where only dwarves with the Trapping profession can make animal traps at the carpenter's workshop (and most likely at the metalsmith's as well.)
