'''Crops''' are plants that may be grown at [[Farming|farm plots]] or gathered from [[shrub]]s. There are two basic types of crops: above ground (AG) and subterranean (or underground, UG). The [[seed]]s of subterranean crops may be brought from the starting [[embark]] screen or, if you've requested them from the [[outpost liaison]], purchased from dwarven [[caravan]]s. Above ground crops cannot be planted by dwarves and must be purchased from [[human]] or [[elf|elven]] caravans or gathered by dwarves with the [[plant gathering]] labor enabled. Seeds may also be collected by processing the plants or eating them (but ''not'' by cooking!).

Several plants listed below are not strictly crops as such as they have no seeds and couldn't be planted even if you wanted to (see note "<sup>3</sup>", below).

Unlike in later versions, outdoor plants are not restricted to specific biomes, but occur in up to 3 distinct locations:
* River - areas within 2 tiles of the outdoor [[river]]
* Swamp - areas within 2 tiles of a [[murky pool]]
* Forest - areas ''not'' within 2 tiles of a water source

Most plants can be [[brew]]ed into [[alcohol]]s, each plant type producing a different variation, and dwarves do prefer some variety in their drink. Some plants may be eaten raw, others must be cooked first, others must be processed first (by [[milling]] or [[plant processing]]) before they are edible, and still others are inedible, producing only non-food products. All drinks may be cooked into meals.

Plants, drinks and products have their values multiplied by how many items are created from a single plant [[stack]].

All drinks require a spare [[barrel]] for storage, and some other products also require specific [[container]]s for storage. Plants can be stored in barrels or individually; seeds are stored individually or in bags which can then be put into barrels.
