23a:Gem

From Dwarf Fortress Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search
This article is about an older version of DF.

Small clusters of rough gems can be found strewn throughout the Template:L. Cut gems can be used to Template:L Template:L, Template:L, Template:Ls, Template:L and Template:L, to create Template:Ls. In addition, raw Template:Ls are required to make crystal glass goods. Rough gems, cut gems and their crystal expressions can be used in the creation of Template:Ls.

Gems have no value in rough form. First they need to be cut in a Template:L. Cut gems have a base value of 5, which is multiplied by appropriate value modifier from the table above. Items can be decorated (encrusted) with cut gems; all such decorations have a value of 10 times the gem type's value multiplier.

Sometimes, rough gems will be cut into Template:Ls or large gems. The chance of creating a "large gem" or craft is roughly 1 in 3, the skill of a gem cutter does not affect this number at all, only the quality of the finished good produced.[Verify] Note that these will replace a cut gem and cannot be used to encrust goods. Such crafts can easily reach hundreds, even thousands depending on the gem.

You can also manufacture raw glass, which is the same as a lower-value, uncut gem.

Varieties

Gems come in 21 varieties, with their own color and value multipliers:

Rarity Gem name Value (×) Color
Synthetic green Template:L 2 2
Synthetic clear Template:L 5 3
Synthetic crystal Template:L 10 7
Ornamental Template:L 3 4
Ornamental Template:L 3 2
Ornamental Template:L 2 1

Semi-Precious Template:L 20 4

Rare Template:L 60 4
Rare Template:L 60 2
Rare Template:L 60 1
Rare Template:L 60 1
Rare Template:L 60 7

Unlike other gems, diamonds can Template:L if they come into contact with Template:L.

Clusters of Ornamental gems can be found anywhere in the mountain, semi-precious gem clusters can be found most commonly beyond the Template:L, and precious gem clusters most frequently occur beyond the Template:L; however, there is always the chance for rarer gems to appear earlier in the mountain. A small percentage of gem clusters will contain additional gems of the same color but of higher rarity, producing a message such as "A miner has found some <gem> in with the <gem>". This is normally the only way to find Rare gems.

Template:L

Raw glass is treated as an uncut gem. There are three subtypes of raw glass (and, once cut, of cut glass gems):

Gem name Value Color Requires
green glass Template:L full of Template:L
clear glass Template:L full of Template:L + Template:L
crystal glass 10× rough Template:L + Template:L

Making raw glass requires a dwarf with the Template:L Template:L designated, and, just like working Template:L, it also requires Template:L (either Template:L or Template:L) at a normal glass furnace, or Template:L at a magma Template:L. Like all gems, raw glass has no Template:L modifiers.

Raw gems are only one of the many things your Template:Ls can make from glass. See Template:L and Template:L for more information.
