This article is about an older version of DF.

The Rest job is activated when a dwarf cannot do most normal tasks (like walking around). The dwarf with the rest job is either rescued and put in a bed, or moves very slowly to the bed leaving a very annoying trail of blood. In most cases the dwarf will stay in the bed until the injuries are fully healed.

Due to a bug, dwarves who pass out from extreme pain will cancel their Rest job but will sometimes not continue it when they awaken, instead remaining at their location with No Job and beginning to become Drowsy (and eventually go insane). The only way to stop this from happening is to deconstruct the bed beneath them, at which point another dwarf will move them to another bed and they will continue Resting (until they pass out again).
