Dwarves with the herbalist skill enabled, and little else to do, should rush out and start trying to gather plants. When an unskilled herbalist attempts to collect plants, there is a chance that nothing will be collected. There are usually plenty of plants tho, so mark a wide area and leave them to it.
-Most plants collected from bushes can be brewed or cooked, some can be used as [[dye]]s. Plants that can be brewed, or cooked, produce seeds, and those seeds can be planted on out door farms. Make sure you create a [[stockpile]] for storing the collecting plants, otherwise they will be left outside to shrivel up in the [[light|sun]]. (A general 'food' stockpile will do, but a [[custom stockpile]] for specific plants will prevent the stockpile filling up with other junk).
